Anyone else notice this line from today's story by Don Spatz on the Boscov vision for downtown Reading: "Chima Inc. had its office there, and Our City built the company a new office at its Wyomissing plant. And, the organization bought out a former service station on the site."
Moving jobs out of the city and further shrinking the tax rolls are exactly why Reading finds itself in bankruptcy. Maybe if Our City Reading has money to burn on new offices, they ought to build 'em downtown. None of the downtown development projects will be on the tax rolls for at least a decade. And without tax revenues to support the increased demand for fire and police protection that will come with these new apartments, Reading will sink deeper into debt, taxes will climb higher and residents will continue to buy homes in the 'burbs. It's a vicious cycle.
