As for spending cuts, the Republicans seem determined to punch a hole in domestic spending prgrams aimed directly at job creation, education, and helping states deal with their dire financial situations. Again, it's difficult to imagine a worse way to bring down the unemployment rate or cripple consumer demand than to throw a bunch of teachers out on the street or force states to cut the public payrolls, at the very moment the economy has just started to gain sustainable momentum. Just when we thought we had escaped the double-dip recession, they dragged us back in!
