"Reading Is on the Move" open thread
Thursday, November 19, 2009 at 08:39AM Enjoy this happy video from the city's Web site, then post your comments on who's to blame for the current financial meltdown. Tom McMahon? Illegal immigrants? The unions? The consultants and lawyers who called the shots during the Haggerty administration?

Oh, si, seenyor. Reading is on the move, all right. All the productive self-respecting people are on the move right smack out of town as fast as they can go, and all mi compadres are on the move into the slums where they can continue lounging around, speaking only that machine-gun bibble-babble of theirs and killing and robbing and looting and gangbanging and spawning illegitimate children and sponging off the system for all the handouts they can get. Oh, si seenyor y seenyora -- Reading, mi orgullo.
"...who's to blame for the current financial meltdown."
There's no one to blame but ourselves. We, the middle class white folks, are the ones who fled to the suburbs beginning back in the 50's when a few minorities moved into the middle class white neighborhoods. We fled and the property values plunged which initiated an influx of low wage earning minorities. Years ago Reading had a population of over 100,000 with most of them middle income families. Today the population is only around 80,000 with most of them low income families.
It's just a simple matter of arithmetic. A declining population plus low wage earners living in lower valued housing equals low tax revenues. Without a larger percentage of middle class families living in middle class housing, Reading will always be a struggling city. There is no quick fix for Reading. Reading has to somehow attract middle income families back to the city, but with all the rundown neighborhoods now I don't know how that's possible. All those things shown in that video are great for the middle class suburbanites to visit, but those things aren't enough of an incentive for them to move back into the city unless the neighborhoods are improved.
Hey, maybe the only answer is for Reading to annex all the suburbs.
"Hey, maybe the only answer is for Reading to annex all the suburbs." Quote by the Jerkoff in Chief, Holy Moly. Let Reading try and annex the suburbs. NEVER HAPPEN. You are just another example of a low life welfare freeloader parasite that is more than happy to force people who work for a living to prop up the irresponsibility of the loser class who are responsible for their own failure. Reading is a shining example of Democratic politics in motion. For decades the Democrats ran Reading ( into the ground). They pandered as always to the freeloaders and losers. They failed to stop the influx of slumlord scum who turned single family houses into multiple rental units. They sang and danced and sucked each other off at the 18th Ward Democratic club while the city fell around them. All while taking bribes and ignoring the oncoming tidal wave of social disaster. Well now rot you worthless urban scum. What they should do is put a huge fence around Reading and let the scum slaughter each other and make all those Democrats live with the scum that they played to. We love hearing Spanish in Reading. Well here Mayor live with them now.
READING IS "ON THE MOVE" ALL (w)RIGHT.
STRAIGHT TOWARDS OBLIVIAN!
SLOWLY DESCENDING UP ITS OWN ASSHOLE!

and a ton of stimulating liberal money,
will never put it back together again!"

Hey, Homo's Dirty Shorts, your reading comprehension and intellect is that of a third grader.
You obviously didn't comprehend that I included myself in the middle class white folk category who fled to the suburbs which means that I'm not a "welfare freeloader". You also apparently didn't comprehend that you were only paraphrasing my premise about Reading's neighborhoods, with the only difference being that you embellished it with all that idiotic bullshit about politics. But what more could I expect from an asshole with a third grader's intelligence?
Hey Homo's Dirty Shorts, since you do have the intelligence of a third grader, you must be in management at the Reading Beagle. Are you in charge of the wording of the headlines?
I think any city that loses the likes of Dana, Ludens, St Joes, and AT&T (technically in Muhlenburg) is going to be in trouble. That's a lot of tax revenue lost.
Si, and whatever is the Chinese word for yes!
I think that this video portrays Reading incorrectly. I honestly think Reading is an awful city. Crime, drug affiliations, and the standard of living all is horrible. I try not to go into Reading as much as possible. I think their is no hope for the city of Reading, but thats just my opinion.
I think that this video portrays Reading incorrectly
it is actually an offshoot of Al Gore's "A Inconvenient Lie"!
